Using the tab’s below I will help explain about the Who, What and How of Illustration with us.

  • About Illustration

Illustrations are a valuable tool in expressing and conveying an idea, visualising a product, story or thought.

There are many different types of illustration directions such as Character Design, Technical, Children’s Books, Medical, History, Teaching Aids, Book Cover’s, Packaging and many, many more. Making Illustration a broad and effective tool for communication.

Illustrations are commonly used in advertising to provoke emotion and produce an alternative vision which photography can not provide or would become costly. e.g. sending a man to the moon to take a photo of him jumping for a Toyota Ad would be more cost effective to have it illustrated here on earth.

Children’s books (apart from the writer of course) are closely associated with illustrators and each book has its own style and feel depending on the illustrator. Some illustrators have one strong style that they have used over many years and others have learn’t many different styles.

l myself have the joy of creating and perfecting many styles keeping my job fresh, using different materials and keeping myself interested in every brief.

You have chosen the right direction now let me show you how its done. I will take you through the simple steps of creating your illustrations together.

  • The Simplified Steps of Illustration

For those that are familiar with hiring a freelance illustrator you can be rest assured you will get the professionalism you are used to with us.

Illustration starts with a brief to figure out what your unique requirements are.

With our experience and your product knowledge we can work out what style and medium that would best suit your requirements. You may already have something in mind and in most instances we can replicate a style to fit with your needs.

Once we have established the direction and end destination e.g. printed or digital format we can start with rough pencil concept designs and work our way through to finished art.

All illustrations are provided Print Ready and for Digital output for use on the internet.

  • Can we afford an Illustrator?

    Illustration is affordable for even the smallest budgets. Getting your friends son to do the job may turn out great (once he finally hands it in) and be cost effective (a case of beer) but in the long run your company needs a professional that can;

    • • Clearly see and meet your objectives
    • • Meet you on your professional level
    • • Have a proven track record
    • • Ability to meet deadlines
    • • Provide quotes and invoices
    • • Provide an ABN for tax purposes
    • • Able to work with printers and prepare files for CMYK printing and the digital print process
    • • A clientele that can vouch and recommend your services

All jobs are provided with a professional quote first before any pencils are picked up. You may have a budget allocated for illustration let us know and were happy to work around it.

  • How long will it take?

Time is a major factor in illustration and some styles take longer than others depending on the finish of the final illustration.
Fast turnaround is common in the illustration business so we are familiar with “We need it yesterday” but it’s best to allocate a reasonable amount of time.

Usually while were waiting for one illustration to get approved to the next stage, were working on two or three other illustrations during the day.

Booking an illustrator early helps with the process and they can gather source material while an editor/art director is finalising a project layout.

Each brief is individual and while some can be done over a few days others may take up to a few months to complete.
As a guide a single line art style illustration can take a few hours and a digitally airbrushed picture under a week.

  • What is a Vector anyway?

Basically there made by dot to dot lines. Vectors are always clear and can be printed at any size and retain a crisp clean line. They can have gradients but consist of mainly solid flat colours. You can zoom in on a vector (on screen) without any loss of clarity.

Suitable for Print and digital output (print, internet or tv screen)

Vectors are made in programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Flash

    Bitmap (Raster)
A bitmap image uses a grid of individual pixels where each pixel can be a different colour or shade. They are most commonly saved as a jpg’s and used solely for screen output and suit the internet. They and look like vectors or Photographs but can not be resized easily with out pixel distortion.

Bitmaps are made in programs such as Adobe Photoshop.
